This Child of Mine

As I type this right now, our son Joshua and his buddy Coleman are road tripping across the country, in tents at national parks from Arizona to South Carolina. He told me the names of the parks they planned to camp at. I connected those destinations on a map and sent it to him asking if that was the tentative route. I’m sure he was rolling those green eyes as he texted back, “Pretty much”. Right before they left they added the Sedona Desert as their first camping spot. I thought what in the world, tent camping in The Sedona Desert at a national park! I texted him and said, “Don’t bring any scorpions home!”

Once a mom, always a mom. Your child is also always you baby no matter how old or big he gets. He has grown into one courageous, kind hearted and stunning person.

As he told me of their road trip plans, I felt my anxiety start to rise. Joshua texted me telling me not to sweat it and they would be fine. I told him he would be the subject of my next book. He said, “No but Coleman wants to be in the next one.” I have plenty of material. All joking aside, it can be nerve racking having an adventurous son. Almost two years ago, Joshua and a group of friends, including three of Coleman’s siblings, hiked a big waterfall. They took theirs shoes off at the bottom and hiked their way up the falls through the water. Once it became too steep they stopped except for two brothers who kept going. One of them slipped way up on a rock, falling into the falls. He never made it home alive. I remember that night like it was yesterday. When the group didn’t arrive back when they said they would, we began making calls. Joshua did come home wearing one of the rescue teams t-shirt. He threw it away not wanting to remember.

God knows our days before we are born. He knows when we will breathe our last breath. We have to trust God with the safety of our children, knowing everything is in His hands. God has seen Joshua through many trials and adventures in life. It’s my prayer that he sees God’s hand guiding him forth. We cover him in prayer daily and his friends as well. I pray on this road trip they will experience God like never before in the majesty of His creation. In the meantime I will keep praying as he is on and off the grid of connection by cell phone. I’m going to be one happy momma when he walks through the door in a few days. Keep them in your prayers.

One chapter in my autobiography is about Joshua. Before publishing my book, “ Rooted by the Water” I asked his permission to include the chapter. I watched his face as he read, pausing, thinking and reading again. He finally said, “I’m glad you’re doing this.” To read more of my story, “Rooted by the Water” you can find it on Amazon and other online retailers. It’s in ebook format and hard and soft cover as well.

To Abide

This week I have been focusing on John 15. I especially love the English Standard Version of this chapter. Jesus tells us to abide in him. He uses the example of how a branch must abide in the vine to bear fruit. We also must abide in Jesus and he in us, so we can bear fruit for his glory.

So what does it mean to abide? The Webster’s Dictionary defines abide as remain, last, reside or endure. Jesus tells us to abide in him, meaning to remain in him. Just like a branch can not bear fruit without remaining in the vine, we also can’t bear fruit unless we remain in Christ.

Every single day we are faced with decisions in how we are going to deal with life. We can wake up and choose Jesus. Choose to be obedient to all he desires for us. Some days are more of a struggle with our fleshly desires. We get frustrated with situations, feelings, opinions, disappointments and the list goes on. So what do we do? Do we choose to abide in Christ or do we choose our own way? I’ve learned from experience that when I choose my own way my joy and peace are lacking.

As I prayed this morning I found myself asking the Holy Spirit to check my heart. God knows what I’m going to say before it comes out of my mouth. Sometimes I feel a check in my heart telling me “Don’t say that” or “Don’t do that”. It’s wise to choose obedience. I’m not saying it’s easy! God knows the struggle is real but he doesn’t leave us on our own to deal with things. God has given us the Holy Spirit and Im so thankful. I can’t make it through a day without leaning on the Lord.

Apart from abiding in Christ, we can’t bear fruit. Galatians 5 tells us that the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. As we abide in Christ these fruits will be evident in our lives.

Living with hearing and visual issues, I need patience, peace, joy and self control not to react in a sassy manner. Oh I can be sassy! I have found that when I choose to abide; choose prayer, times of worship and reading scriptures, when I choose obedience to what God desires, I am more likely to respond to life struggles in a more God honoring way. As we continue in 2022 my prayer is that we will abide in Christ……remain in him… flourish in our spiritual growth..
bloom and bear much fruit for the glory of God.

Refreshed

A couple of days ago I went on a ladies retreat with the Central Church Ladies Ministry to The Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove in Asheville NC. It was truly an incredible experience and to think I almost backed out of going.

The beautiful Chapel.

When I first signed up to attend, three of my deaf friends were also going. We had planned to room together. As the retreat got closer all three of my friends had to back out for various reasons. I still wanted to go but I was reluctant since I didn’t know anyone well.

With my hearing and visual issues, being in an unfamiliar place with people I didn’t know well and also not knowing what to expect had me way out of my comfort zone. I talked it over with a friend and she encouraged me to go. She said being out of my comfort zone gave God more opportunity to stretch me. She was right.

Peaceful view from the Training Center deck.

Although I was still not comfortable with going, I actually asked the Lord to help me get through it as I boarded the bus. Let me explain just a little bit. Having my visual problem ( I am legally blind although I don’t think of myself that way. Labels are confining. I don’t need a white cane and I don’t have a seeing eye dog but my vision is still NOT good at all). Add to that being deaf and hearing with a cochlear implant … with a processor that is currently not working right. Oh my goodness! So I asked the Lord to get me through the retreat and boy did He ever! It was beyond anything I could have anticipated. I think I’m going to break into a song “ Let me tell ya about my Jesus” Oops! I got off track there but it’s true. Let me tell you!

One of my favorite verses was on the wall in the Upper Prayer Room.

Even though I could not see the peoples name tags. Well I could see them but not read them, everyone was so welcoming and so so sweet. Two deaf ladies signed up to come and they were helpful and so much fun. One interpreter ( Lauren ) from church who has become a sweet friend, insisted on helping me. She sat beside me to make sure I understood. My heart swells with gratitude. My roommate Barbara who is also deaf, was such a joy. She helped me see where things were in the dining room, telling me the foods at the buffet. I really enjoyed getting to know her.

Me and my roommate Barbara.

The sessions were encouraging and testimonies shared were beautiful. Lauren and Barbara were my trail buddies walking to the chapel. I thought the trails were all paved but not the one we took. It was gravel and leaves covered a small part of it. They made sure I didn’t trip on the rocks, roots and uneven ground. We stopped at each scripture post and one of them would sign what it said. Barbara wanted to find the little mountain creek and listen to the soothing sounds of the water. (She can hear that with her hearing aids). We got to the chapel and let me tell you….that place is gorgeous! In the upper prayer room we knelt down to pray. It was a beautiful experience.

Trail buddies ~ Barbara, me and Lauren.

Friday evening at dinner a couple we had not met sat down where we were sitting. The lady knew some sign language so we wondered if she was hearing impaired. It turns out it was Charity Gayle and her husband Ryan Kennedy. They were there to lead us in an unforgettable night of worship. While I had never heard of them before ( I don’t know many music artist by name) I was familiar with some of the songs they have written. They were so down to earth and humble. They led us in an AMAZING time of worship. It was not like a performance but rather an invitation to join them in worshipping Jesus. It was simply beautiful.

Our table group with Ryan Kennedy and Charity Gayle. (bottom left)

At our final session Catherine, the ladies ministry director, taught on Exodus 17 when Aaron and Hur held up Moses hands when he got weary, as Joshua fought the Amalekkies. We need to support others going through hard things and when they are weary. As I think back over the retreat, that’s what Barbara and Lauren did. They supported me through being way out of my comfort zone. I went unsure but came home refreshed.

Listening to the little mountain creek.

Don’t ne afraid to walk through doors of opportunity God opens. When He opens a door, He will walk you through it, giving you the resources you need and you will come away so refreshed and grateful for the lessons learned. Grateful for His goodness! I’m changed. So thankful!

One last funny note. My husband Ron picked me up when the bus arrived back to the church. We stopped at a little Chinese restaurant for lunch. My heart was full and as we were sitting at the table waiting for our food I softly started singing. Ron said, “What are you singing?” I said “Can you hear me? I didn’t realize I was singing out loud”. I was singing one of Charity Gayles songs “What your mercy did for me”. I came home from the retreat and started looking her up on iTunes. I purchased two of her albums and started looking up lyrics so I can sing along.

Take a look

Lately I’ve caught myself taking a step back and looking at myself. While chaos seems to be overtaking the world. I’ve never in my lifetime seen such division among people. It would be so easy to get sucked into the arguments but that isn’t pleasing to the Lord.

As I take a step back and look at myself, my words, attitudes and actions, I must aim to be a reflection of my Savior Jesus Christ. God knows I fall short and need His help every single day. God sure does know my hearts desire to please Him and be a reflection of His peace and compassion.

As I sit here reflecting and old song came to mind. “Mirror” by Evie. I had not heard it since I was a little girl at Grace Presbyterian. The lyrics go something like this……” You’re searching for Jesus, looking to find, hope for tomorrow some peace of mind” – the lyrics go on to say, you can find Him in the Bible and many churches BUT until you find Him in the mirror, you’ve got a long way to go. ( www.musixmatch.com)

This stirs my heart. I want to look in the mirror and see Jesus reflection as He molds me into the woman He wants me to be. Let’s be moldable and willing. The world is in dire need of seeing the light of Jesus! Let’s be a reflection of Jesus for all the world to see.

Keep focused. There is work to be done. Share the Gospel! Shine for the Lord!

Celebrating Dad (Forrest Kenley)

“God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

On this day 79 years ago, my Dad was born. Tomorrow marks 6 months since he went home to be with Jesus. Not a day passes by that I don’t think of him.

It is amazing the comfort the Lord has brought to our family. Yes we miss Dad greatly but we know he is with Jesus and we know we will see him again. Knowing this brings such comfort to my heart.

Today is his first birthday celebration in Heaven and I know without a doubt, it’s the best one he’s ever had. I know he’s smiling BIG knowing Forrest Jr. is doing so well after his recently one year bone marrow transplant anniversary. He would be so proud of Mom and the strength and courage she has shown. He would be proud of my book “Rooted by the Water” and the spin off blog I’ve started. He told me I should write. He liked the way I put things into words on my Facebook posts. However he did tell me to not write any emotional sappy posts after he died. (his words not mine ) 🤣 He was funny and I think he will forgive this one. He would be excited to know a great grand baby is on the way. He would LOVE that! He would love hearing about the upcoming wedding for his granddaughter. And he’d be so proud of Joshua too as he shows strength and resilience in life.

Grief is a strange thing. It still has not hit that he’s really gone. I know that’s the comfort from the Lord and I’m so grateful.

We celebrate you today Dad. Your legacy of love for God, and generous spirit continues. You are missed greatly but we will see you again!

Happy birthday Dad! I love you! 😎🤟🏼 (Those were the emojis he put at the end of his texts to me).

Show compassion

It’s been several days since my last blog. Over the last week or so I’ve just been observing and praying. With my limited vision and hearing, I often ask my husband Ron if I’m understanding right. I pick up on things others might miss; body language and frustrations. People are weary; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Not only are people weary, they also are divided.

I was praying this morning and then as I read in Matthew, I came across this verse. “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew‬ ‭9:36‬ ‭NLT‬‬

While I don’t profess to be highly intelligent. I do use the gifts God has given me. As I pray for wisdom and discernment, my heart aches for people. There is mass misinformation. “Itching ears” can find information to backup whatever their view is to justify their beliefs. But Jesus has all the answers. He can solve all the questions we have. We must go to Him in prayer and read His Word “The Bible”. In John 14: 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” NIV

Jesus has the answers. He is Truth. He is always ready to pour compassion on us, direct us in our confusion and lift the burdens off our shoulders. He is ready to forgive when we confess our sins and ask Him to help us change.

If you are weary and disheartened today, I encourage you to “Unplug yourself from the noise of the world”. Find a quiet place and meditate on Jesus. Worship Him and soak in His Word. As we all do this on a daily basis, I pray the Holy Spirit will pour into our weary vessels. Pour in His compassion for this confused and hurting world. Let us unite in prayer. The world is in dire need of Jesus! Times are short! Pray! Read the Bible! Let Jesus use you today!

“He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few.”‭‭Matthew‬ ‭9:37‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Unity

Today I have been thinking about the word Unity and what it means. I decided to grab my Webster’s New Thesaurus and this is what I found. (I will just post a picture of the entry. The machine I use to read is a Optelec video magnifier for people with low vision )

I also went to Bible Gateway and typed Unity into the search bar. Several verses came up including these:
Ephesians 4: 1-3 NIV
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the Unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Psalms 133:1 NIV
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.

I don’t know about you, but I see a lot of division these days. Division is a tactic of the enemy to divide us so we won’t be affective as a whole. There is discord on all kinds of current HOT topics. It troubles my heart to see opposition. There is so much information, misinformation…. opinions on anything and everything.

So what can we do? We can bear with each other in love and be patient when people don’t see “Eye to eye”. We can pray for wisdom and keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Hold the hostility with debates. I pray our Abba Father sees us all and says “ Look at my children. So diverse and unique ….sharing peaceably their opinions with one another in humility and love.” Lets us strive to be United for the Lord.

Together we stand, divided we fall.

Finding Gems in the Word

During my quiet time this morning I read 2 Corinthians 4. Found some “gems” and thought I would share.

“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:8, 18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.”‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Yesterday a friend texted me that she was experiencing a sense of heaviness. I shared with her that I too felt that way. There is so much going on in the world and so much misinformation. I reminded her that we are surrounded by the Lord. He will get us through.

Today is a new day. Let’s choose to Fix our eyes on Jesus. He is Victorious! This is not our home, we are just passing through.

Today Shine for Jesus. The world is in desperate need of His Glorious Light and Salvation.

Have a blessed day.

Preparation for the daily grind

It’s a great morning. I’m back on my back porch in my “quiet place/ prayer outdoor room”. Ive missed this! While last weeks Girlfriends beach trip was a blast and I was able to really think on the Lord in His beautiful creation, it was difficult to find blocks of “Quiet uninterrupted time” with God.
I missed this time to unplug myself from people and just soak in Hs presence. My back porch quiet times are filled with Soft worship, praying out loud as that helps me to focus and reading the Bible using You Version app. I wish I could se well enough to read an actual Bible but I can only do that with my video magnifier in the study room. I’m grateful for a refreshing time away but am ready to get back on track.

Thankful for a beautiful time with the Lord this morning to prepare me for the day ahead.
I hope everyone has an awesome day. God is so good and faithful… Always! Www.shannonkenleyhinson.com
