Keep on!

This is day 10 of 2023 and I’m just now stopping to blog. I decided to read through the Bible again this year in the New Living Translation. As I’ve been reading I’ve made notes on a few possible blog topics. Today I will focus on “Keeping on”. I came across this verse as I was reading recently. It’s a perfect verse for this first blog of the year. “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Keep on asking! God wants us to bring our concerns to Him. He delights when we choose to pray and acknowledge His Lordship over our lives. I love how God has revealed aspects of my relationship with Him through being a Mom. It warms my heart when my grown son seeks me out just to talk and share his life with me. God is my Heavenly Father, and He delights in me praying and seeking Him out to share my heart.

Keep on seeking! I want to know God more and more. Through studying the Bible, learning in church, worship and fellowship, I desire to grow into all He desires for me. Never become satisfied with where you are in your relationship with Jesus. There is always room to grow closer in our walk with Him. Study Jesus character and how He handled situations. I want to be a reflection of who He is. As I seek you Lord, change me!

Keep on knocking! As we ask, seek and knock He will reveal more to us. I want to walk in God’s will for my life. I desire to be the woman He created me to be. I desire to fulfill His call to shine for Him.

Keep on being You! I love when people are real and genuine. We are all human and make mistakes. We all need grace. As God freely gives us grace, be sure to give it to others.

Keep on finding joy in the little things in life. Last Sunday there was a young mom sitting behind me in church with her precious baby daughter. After the service I was marveling at the sweetness of this precious child and she let me hold her. Oh the simple joy and delight in holding a tiny baby.

Keep on finding fun in the ordinary things. My husband and I went to get our hair cut today. The same girl does both of our hair. I was showing her a picture of what I wanted and as I zoomed in ( I have low vision) we saw it was a wig. We all started laughing and I said to Ron, “A wig would solve your problem of having to bring me to get haircuts!” We were all laughing. I turned to our hairstylist and said “This is us!” Life is life, but you can find joy and laughter in the ordinary.

So whatever you do as you start off this year keep on keeping on. God has us. Keep looking to Him and He will direct you.

Wrap it up

As 2022 winds down to a close, where do you find yourself? Some people take inventory of their lives at the close of the year and make goals for the new year. We live and hopefully learn along the way so we can move forward. Experience is a great teacher.

Whatever happened in 2022, it’s in the past. We all stumble and fall short. I’m so thankful for the grace of God! When I confess my sins to Jesus, He forgives me. Sometimes we get hung up on past mistakes and defeats. We have to forgive ourselves too and show ourselves grace so we can move forward.

The devil is constantly bringing up our shortcomings so we feel unworthy and unloved. Let me remind you that the devil is the father of lies! (John 8:44)

If you find yourself in a pit of despair, climb out! You might like your little comfort zone. Im speaking to myself here as well. When I close myself off to people and stay comfortable in life, I don’t grow. God has ordained us to make a difference for His kingdom. I believe my purpose in life is to bring God glory. I can’t do that in my comfort zone.

Is God saying to you, “Why are you walking in defeat?” Don’t let this world define you! Rise up to be all God is calling you to be. You might be saying, “But no one understands what I’m going through. “ Let me tell you something,, Jesus fully understands! He left His throne where He had full authority. He chose to be born as a baby to poor young parents. He was fully God and fully human. He understands. Turn your eyes on Jesus. Look to Him in every situation. He cares about every detail of our lives. Nothing is too big or too small to take to Him in prayer. He is always there waiting for you to come to Him. You are never alone.

Recently I was reading Isaiah 40. I love the whole chapter but the last verse struck me as I read the New Living Translation. “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Isaiah‬ ‭40‬:‭31‬ ‭(NLT‬‬). For some reason the word soar really stood out to me. It was like the Holy Spirt dropped that word into my heart for 2023. I’ve heard people say before that God gives them a word for the new year but this was my first experience with this.

I’m not sure exactly what God is trying to tell me but I know this: as I fix my eyes upon Jesus, and wait upon Him , He will renew my strength for whatever lies ahead. He will enable me to soar. It won’t be in my own strength but in His. If you know my story you might be shaking your head. This girl is legally blind and deaf, hearing with a cochlear implant. What in the world can she do? On my own… nothing! But all things are possible with God! (Mark 10:27). I love this next verse as it is so encouraging to me. “Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭9‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

As we wrap up 2022 and prepare for 2023, don’t be afraid. Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Read these next two verses. I love this so much. “But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” Isaiah‬ ‭43‬:‭1-2‬( ‭NLT‬‬)
Here is another verse that I love. “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

I have truly shared my heart with you as2022 is coming to a close. Let me speak truth over you as you step into the new year. “So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do.” 2 Thessalonians‬ ‭1‬:‭11‬ ‭(NLT‬) I love God Word. Now rise up and soar into the new year! ‭‭

Sought & Found ~ Great Joy

Image found on Pinterest

I can’t tell you how light my heart has been these last few weeks. As I sit in the early mornings with just the Christmas tree lights on, it is utterly peaceful. These early morning times are spent in prayer and reading the Bible. I do this everyday year round , minus the Christmas tree lights which are only on in December and part of January. These times with Jesus set the pace for my day.

As the Christmas Carol goes, Joy to the world the Lord is come. Let earth receive her King. Let every heart prepare Him room…. I will stop right there. I personally opened my heart to Jesus years ago. He is the greatest gift from God. He fills my heart with great Joy. I have sought and found Him and my confidence is in Him for all my needs. He fills my life with great joy and helps me have perspective on the hard things in life.

You might scoff at my view and think I live under a rock. Yes I know all the troubles going on in the world. Yes I see the suffering. Life is tough. Being legally blind and deaf is a day to day challenge that few understand. BUT God gives me such great determination and strength to endure. It’s not about me and having it all easy. It’s about Jesus and bringing glory to His name.

Jesus is the best and most Undescribable gift! Like the shepherds and wise men who eagerly followed the star and found baby Jesus in a manager, in a stable. When they found Him they were filled with awe and joy. Have you sought Jesus? He is waiting for you to make room in your heart amd life for Him.

Christmas is a promise kept. (God keeps All His promises) The prophets foretold Jesus birth hundreds of years before it happened. Wow! What an awesome God we serve. As I typed that I actually started singing the worship chorus… My God is awesome, He can move a mountain, keep me in the valley. Hide me from the rain. My God is awesome, heals me when I’m broken, strength when I am weary, forever He will reign. I’m sitting here with tears streaming down my cheeks. I might not have the words exactly right but my heart is in tune with my Lord.

Do you know Jesus? He is the greatest gift you will ever get! When you accept Him as your Lord and Savior and confess and repent of your sins, He forgives you and fills you with such peace.

If you have wandered away from the faith, come home to Jesus! He is the only thing that will ever satisfy your soul. The world is filled with distractions and momentary pleasures but they won’t ever fill your heart. There is a place in our hearts that only Jesus can fill. Make room! Don’t turn Him away.

Dear Jesus I pray for all who read this, I pray you will open their eyes to your truth, your word, your love. As we prepare to celebrate your birth, I pray we each worship you with all our hearts and rejoice in the gift you give. It’s all about you Jesus! Show us the way! Shine brightly for the whole world to see! I love you Lord! Happy birthday Jesus? Amen!

Merry Christmas to you all! If you liked this blog post please subscribe. You can find my autobiography Rooted by the Water on Amazon. I pray it gives you great hope and courage to surrender to Jesus. He is all you really need. Be blessed.

St-re-tc-hi-ng me

It’s the season for parties and gatherings of all sizes. Tis the season of stretching me! Im not a groups kind of person. I love people but with limited hearing and vision its always a challenge as I try to navigate the social environment.

Today I had two Christmas events to attend with my mom. My husband had to work, so mom and I went to our Lit & Latte Book Club Christmas party and a ladies event at her church. We love our book club friends. Truth be told, I don’t hear very much of the discussion and kind of have to watch movements to figure out who is speaking. However they know me, my limitations, my story and love me anyway. The ladies event at moms church was a real stretch. I will guess there were over 100 ladies there. Some I had not seen in years. It was great to see them all again but these social settings are truly out of my comfort zone. Thankfully we sat front and center, so I could sort of see what was happening. Knowing my limitations I have to approach these things with a sense of openness and adventure. Everyone likely comes away from these things with different senses of pleasure. For me it was the joy of recognizing the worship songs when I can’t see the lyrics on the screen. As I raised my hand to worship Jesus, tears slid down my cheeks. I may not have gleamed much from the message because I couldn’t quite comprehend what she was saying but my heart heard the worship and I gave in to that precious gift.

As the festivities continue over the next couple of weeks, there will be more gatherings. Christmas can be challenging for some people. Whether it’s because of physical limitations, or pressures coming from expectations. Give yourself a break. Give the gift of you. Your presence, your smile, hugs, kindness are all gifts. Go with an open heart. Even if you feel broken, God will meet you there. You might feel stretched but if you are really honest about the important things, you will be blessed by giving the gift of you!

Oh come let us adore Him. oh come let us adore Him, oh come let us adore Him..Christ The Lord!

Just a thought?

Picture found on Pinterest

I came across this quote today when I saw a friends post. “You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate.” Elizabeth Gilbert. What a powerful truth! Just think, if we spent as much time selecting our thoughts as we do our wardrobe how much our lives would improve. Choose your thoughts carefully and be careful of what lingers there. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” (ESV)

Our thought life can feed our emotions. It’s wise to realize that our minds are a battle ground. We can and should filter our thoughts, but how? Philippians 4:8 tells us, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (ESV) emphasis mine. That’s pretty clear instructions.

There is always the temptation to speculate. People form ideas and thoughts based on things they think but are not factual. When the temptation arises, filter those thoughts.

Not only do we have power over our thoughts but we also have power over the words we speak. Speak positively! Speak life! I have known so many people who have been hurt by careless words. When our son was growing up, I told him “Spoken words are like toothpaste. Once it’s out you can’t put it back in”. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭21‬ ‭(ESV‬). Whoa! That’s powerful!

As we enter the holiday season where there ate many gatherings, let’s be mindful and considerate of those around us. Control your thoughts and your speech. Give the gift of genuine affection and encouragement. Everyone has issues whether they want to admit it or not. Everyone could use a smile, kind words and even a hug.

Let’s spread gifts of peace, kindness, love and joy! I don’t know about you but when I do these things it makes my heart feel happy. Be blessed as you be a blessing

Do You?

As I was reading the Bible this morning, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 stood out to me. These verses actually challenge me every time I read them. “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭16‬ -18 (NIV‬)‬. This is beyond challenging from a human point of view. That’s the thing, God wants us to depend on Him to enable us to do this. Can you imagine rejoicing or having great delight, ALWAYS? That’s what the verse says.

What about praying continually? When we have a relationship with Jesus we want to talk to Him about everything. The more I study the Bible, Gods Word and spend time with Him, the easier it gets to pray about everything. God cares about every single detail of our lives. As a mom, I love when my son wants to talk to me, ask for help or my opinion. God is the same way! He desires us to bring situations to Him and ask him to help us through whatever it is. It’s a loving relationship that draws us to pray continually! God loves us so much He gave His only son. John 3:16 says, ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.(ESV‬). I could go on and on here but bottom line is, God loves you more than you can ever possibly imagine. He is delighted when we desire to pray continually. Praying changes things! It may not always play out the way you think it will. The situation may not change in the way you want it to. However I am certain of this, prayer will change you! Your attitude will changes. Anger and negative feelings will change. Prayer will change your view on what’s going on. God enables us to see things differently. Sometimes that different perspective is all that needed to enable you to endure.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us to give thanks in ALL circumstances, (emphasis added). This is a tough one. In my personal life, living with hearing and visual limitations, thanking God for these things is hard. This is what God has shown me: Be thankful for what I can see and hear. Yes I do have significant loss BUT I still have some vision and some hearing. I’m beyond thankful for what I have even if it’s limited.

You may be thinking; Shannon you have no clue what I’m dealing with. You’re right, I don’t but God does! If you woke up this morning, He has a purpose for your day. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭136‬:‭1‬ ‭(ESV‬‬). Give thanks! You can find something to thank God for. When you focus on blessings, your attitude will change.

I understand that life is frustrating and dealing with people can be trying. The Bible gives us some practical ways to triumph over them. Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭6 says, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (ESV). So when you pray, thank God for working it out according to His perfect Will. Thank Him for His faithfulness. Thank Him that His promises stand.

Recently my husband and I were talking about health insurance. He was frustrated because it’s hard to get people on the phone then you are transferred around until someone finally can answer your questions. He was telling me, “I can’t get anyone on the phone!” I challenged him to be thankful in the situation. I told him, “We’ve prayed now let’s thank God for working it out.” His answer… “But you don’t understand.” I told him to just do it. Thank God for His favor. Thank God for working this out. Thank God when someone answers the phone. Thank God when the call is transferred because they are seeking a solution.” You get the picture?

So as we head into the holiday season let’s rejoice always, pray continually and be thankful in all circumstances because God is faithful always.

Costly Oil

Pictures found on Pinterest

Oil? Yes oil! A need for fresh oil has been a repetitive thing in my spirit lately. I’m not referring to the cooking kind, or automotive kind, but rather that of the Holy Spirit.

Last week I met with a group of friends to dig into Gods Word. One friend was intrigued about the ten virgins in Matthew 25. It was an interesting discussion as we looked up scripture related to this topic and life application. Bottom lime is, we need fresh oil to shine for Jesus. Fresh oil or anointing comes from spending time in prayer, worship and reading Gods Word.

This week I’ve been reflecting on this and coming across other bits of information that all go along together. I came across a statement that made me think. Sometimes the answer to my prayer is not what I gain but rather what I lose. When I spend time in prayer I lose anger, anxiety, frustration, dpression and hurt to name a few. Those loses are ultimately gains. Sometimes life is a big mess of frustration. I find myself often praying, “Lord help me”. His answers are not always in the way I’d like, but in one way or another, Jesus shows Himself faithful.

Last week when I met with my neighbor for our Bible study, we were analyzing scriptures about healing. One name of our God is, Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord who heals. As we were praying and sharing about different things, I told her I believe God can heal my optic nerves. I told her of my frustrations with my Optelec magnifier being broke and the parts being so pricey. The part that came in that did not fix the problem, cost $100 just to ship back. I told my friend, “ God needs to either fix my optic nerves or fix my machine! “ Yesterday my husband finally was able to get in touch with a regional person about a used machine. The man has a used one that he will sell us for $800, we just have to meet him some time this week. Thank you Jesus! That is a big answer to prayer. Of course I’d prefer healing but I’m trusting God.

I came across another thing online that really summed up my life and the difficulties I face. The post was on social media by Hannah Williamson, who I do not know. She started by saying, “Your calling is going to crush you.” I’m going to quote her here because it was so spot on true and she said she is sharing because someone else desperately needs it. I was one of those people. I read it over and over and I cried. Life is a big jumbled up frustration and I don’t typically talk about it because God is the only one who can change things. It’s no one’s fault so I push through. Here is the whole post I read on Facebook. I had trouble formatting this so everything below in gold is Hannah Williamsoms words.

Hannah Williamson, October 19

Your calling is going to crush you.

👉🏼 I have posted this before, but someone desperately needs this reminder.

💔If you are called to mend to the brokenhearted, you are going to wrestle with a broken heart.

👦🏻If you are called to heal God’s little ones, you have probably experienced your own share of trauma.

🗣If you are called to prophesy, you’re going to struggle with self-control of the tongue.

🩺If you are called to lay hands, you’re going to deal with spiritually-rooted disease.

🪨If you’re called to preach and teach the gospel, you WILL be sifted for the wisdom that anoints your message.

🪞If you are called to empower, your self-esteem will be attacked- your successes hard fought.

⚔️Your calling will come with spiritual warfare and a sifting – BOTH are necessary for your mantle to be authentic, humble and powerful.

Your crushing won’t be easy because your assignment is not easy – and you can’t minister POWERFULLY what you haven’t walked out. Read that sentence again.

🕊When you’re feeling the weight of it coming down on you, RUN to the father who longs to be your comfort. Let him whisper your true identity over you while resting under the shadow of his wings. Position yourself against his heartbeat. Let him renew your strength and set your eyes forward. No olives, no oil. No grapes, no wine.

Your oil is not cheap my friend.

Hannah’s post has been shared many times and I too shared it with friends. May God bless Hannah for her faithfulness in sharing this encouragement.

As we continue to be pressed on every side by life, crushed and in the refiners fire, don’t lose hope. Press in closer to Jesus as He renews us daily with fresh strength, fresh anointing and everything we need to walk victoriously in this life.

His Grace is Enough

Lately grace has been on my mind. If not for God’s grace, where would I be in life? Life is full of complications and sometimes keeping a positive outlook can be quite a stretch. There is a saying, “But for the grace of God…” Amen!

If you are like me, you may have been praying for years and years for breakthroughs on many different things. When the answers don’t come like I think, it is tempting to get discouraged. It’s vital to remember to pray “thy will be done”, not my will but God’s.

I love when people are real and transparent. No one has a perfect life. When we share struggles with one another we are encouraged that we aren’t alone. When we share our victories we can rejoice together.

My friend and I met for our Bible study today. I am so thankful for her. She blesses my heart Today we talked about the sovereignty of God. I love how we can share our lives and what God is teaching us. We can encourage each other. As we studied today we saw how the scriptures prove that God has complete control over everything. It is comforting to know that I don’t need to worry because God is going to work it out according to His perfect Will. Romans 8:28 says “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”(‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

Life happens. When we wake up each day we give it our best shot. Yet sometimes our best shot falls short of the expectations we set for ourself. I must be mindful that as thankful as I am for Gods grace, I also must show myself grace. I am far from perfection but I do set high expectations for myself. When high expectations meet low vision and hearing issues, it’s a big frustration waiting to happen. The amount of typos I make on this iPad touch screen would blow your mind. So whether it’s a text, e mail, blog, comment… whatever it is, I have to zoom in large and I do mean LARGE to see and correct all the many typos. Lord help me and thankfully He does!

What doesn’t break you makes you stronger! We need refining in trials of life in order to reflect Gods character and bring glory to Him. James‬ ‭1:2- 4 says, ‬“Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
‭‭(‭NASB2020‬)‬

Have you had any trials lately? Can you find joy in those trials? In all honesty, I must say no. I don’t find joy in the trials but God willing, as He continues to work on me and show me grace, I will. It can be tiresome but we must keep our focus on our destination… Jesus. “Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:18‬ ‭(NLT‬)

In true Shannon fashion, a song just popped into my head and I most likely have the lyrics wrong but here goes… There ain’t no doubt about it, I’m on my way home. I’m not yet where I’m going, but I’m a long way from where I was. I hear a crowd of angels cheering me on…. There ain’t no doubt about it, I’m on my way home.”

As we wrap up Monday, I will say “good night everybody”. Keep on keeping on. New grace and mercies await us in the morning. Thank you Jesus!

Stirred byWhat?

Today I’d like to continue on the topic of stirring. Specifically what stirs you? What irritates you and prompts you to speak or act? There are so many things that stir people to react that it’s impossible to list them all. The level of maturity, restraint, strength, self control and compassion can dictate how you handle those things that trigger you.

Yesterday my son Joshua and I spent some time together. He is one of my favorite people. Since returning home from Arizona he has moved back in with us until he decides what he wants to do. We are savoring this time together. He has had some quality times with his dad but yesterday it was just the two of us. We got some subs from Jersey Mikes then got groceries. We talked about all sorts of things. We came across the topic of things that are annoying. It was kind of funny because dealing with people can be a huge test of character. As I listened I understood his point of view and I also took his age into consideration. When I was 24 I thought along the same lines. Amazing how wisdom comes with age. I told him people will be people. You can’t let it bother you. It’s best to just let it go. Sure it is annoying and yes it takes self control to not respond to it but we have to rise above the situation and let it go. Life is largely out of our control. We don’t have to let negativity around us affect our day. Just do what you can with kindness and move on. A positive loving word can go a long way.

So what stirs people? Why are people so angry, bitter, self centered and proud? Granted, I do miss a lot having low vision and hearing issues but I truly “see” people. I ask questions. I ask my husband things all the time. I ask him about peoples face expressions and things they say. I ask him about people driving along, what they look like, expressions and mannerisms. I’m just intrigued by human nature and how people respond to things. Behind every harsh look or bitter response there is a person who quite possibly is hurting and in need of grace and love. When situations and people make you angry think beyond the situation to what truly is the root of the issue. The Bible tells us in Ephesians‬ ‭6:12, “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”(New Living Translation) Let’s let that scripture sink into our hearts.

There is more to be shared on this topic. Im going to meditate on Gods Word and see what he reveals to me. Stay tuned…..
‭‭‬ ‭
