Change Me

Found on Pinterest.

As I recently heard about the Asbury Revival in Kentucky, it got me thinking. We are in such a dire need of revival. Our world and culture are so evil. We are bombarded daily by sin and people’s indifference to it. I “sat on” this blog topic all last week because it seemed an overwhelming task to even address. There is a fierce spiritual war going on and many people just sit on the sidelines and do nothing. We must repent and pray! We ALL sin and fall short of the glory of God.

This is not about going around judging people. It’s about allowing God to really examine our hearts and motives. Last week in my Bible reading I came across two verses in Psalms 24 verses 3-4: “Who may climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies.” (NLT). We need to ask, Lord are my hands clean? What abound my heart?

What people seem to forget is how Holy our God is! People are bombarded so much by sin they begin to accept it. Sex, violence, deception, pride, idolatry, worship of self, racism, disrespect and hate are constantly thrown in our faces by the media and entertainment industry. I personally don’t watch tv so I am careful what I expose myself to. When I am exposed to things of the world it really bothers me because I’m not used to it. I know what Gods Word says is right and wrong. I don’t water it down. It is what it is. Recently I finished a book that my book club was reading. It was a somewhat good book. However, for some reason the author shared the sex life of one character. It was so unnecessary. It would have otherwise been a good book without the casual sex encounters. That is a reflection of the society in which we live.

It’s not only spiritual warfare it’s psychological warfare as well. When people are exposed to some things so constantly over and over, it’s like they begin to just accept it as the way it is. However, Gods Word does not change. Since the beginning in the Garden of Eden, satan has twisted the Word of God. It is Imperative that we know the Bible and let it transform us through and through.

We need a revival and it starts with each individual person. Pastors must stop watering down the living Word of God! Preach the Cross! Preach the blood of Jesus! Preach repentance for sin! Preach resurrection! In Psalms 139, David cries out to God. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭23‬-‭24‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

This is War! It is crucial that we put on the armor of God every single day. (Ephesians 6:11-13) I recently was pretty annoyed by someone and was tempted to respond in the flesh which would not have been honoring to God. I asked my Bible study sisters to pray for me to resist the temptation. One reminded me to put on the helmet of salvation which included a mouth piece. I told her I needed a finger guard too to keep me from texting exactly what I thought. Just being real. No one is perfect. I never did say what annoyed me. I just needed prayer to not react in the flesh. The next day “Don’t rain on someone else’s parade” popped in my mind. When someone shares their experiences with me, I should not think of implications they might miss. If God wants to convict them, He will. I need to mind my own business. I‘m thankful for a teachable spirit.

I could go on and on with this but I’m going to wrap it up. Lord change us! Purify us and let revival come!
“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭16‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

A worship song is playing in my heart and I probably don’t have the words exactly right but here is what I’m singing right now. I’m going to praise you with everything in me. I’m going to lift you on high for all the world to see. I’m going to worship in every way that I can and when I’ve done it all, I’ll do it all again.

What do you reflect?

Found on Pinterest.

Seeing the sky reflected on water is one of the most captivating sights to me. One of my favorite things to see is the moons reflection off the ocean. It’s the very simple things in life that I find compelling and nature always speaks of the things of God.

Just like physical things are reflected in a mirror, shiny surface or water: what’s in our heart is reflected by our attitudes and actions. Proverbs 27:19 says, “As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.” (‭NLT‬)

Being hearing and visually limited, I often find myself thinking of deep things. When I am out in public, what am I reflecting? Do I reflect my Savior? Can people tell I am a Christian by my responses to situations? Am I reflecting love, kindness, gentleness and self control, just to name a few. Don’t get me wrong, I am far from perfect. I just tend to think about these types of things.

Human nature is so fascinating. I often wonder what makes people tick. We all deal with the desires of the flesh and struggle with responding in ways contrary to the flesh. Alone we can’t make these better choices. However the Holy Spirit is always willing to guide us forth in victory when we surrender our desires and seek to reflect Jesus. It’s a daily challenge we all face. We will fall short but Jesus is always willing to strengthen us to rise up again to reflect all He is.

Let me encourage you this weekend to be a reflection of Jesus! The world desperately needs to see God in us. If you liked this blog post please subscribe. Refining & forgiveness

Found on Pinterest

Several days ago I published a blog titled “Thrown under the bus?” I wrote on life applications from the life of Joseph in Genesis chapters 37, 39-48. There are a couple more things I want to touch on before moving beyond this incredible character in the Old Testament.

It’s amazing to see God at work in the lives of people. Through the successes, failures, triumphs and trials: it takes the Holy Spirits guidance to see Gods hand at work through it all.

When Joseph was younger he had a dream about his brothers bowing before him. Genesis‬ ‭37‬:‭8 says, “His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.” (NLT‬‬)

I may be wrong but I pick up on some immaturity in these earlier accounts of Joseph telling his brothers about his dreams. Once they sold him into slavery, all the many hardships, injustice and trials shaped his character. You see that God was with him during each trial and allowed him to succeed.

Years later when his brothers had to go to Egypt for food because the famine was so bad, his dream came true. At this time Joseph was second in command in Egypt and in charge of all the food. His brothers came before him to get food, not knowing he was their brother because he used an interpreter. Joseph could have gloated over them and reminded them of his earlier dream but he did not. However he did test them by asking questions about their family, if their father was alive, and if they had any other brothers. In this way he could see if they had changed.

When his brothers came back to Egypt a second time for food, he ended up telling them who he was. This is such a beautiful story of forgiveness. Joseph has seen the hand of God in his journey of grief. God has developed his character and he was able to freely forgive his brothers for all they did to him. Genesis‬ ‭45‬:‭5 says, “But don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.” (NLT‬‬)

We all could learn something from Joseph’s life of example. Don’t let bitterness take hold in your heart. Forgive those who have hurt you and cause trouble. Unforgiveness and bitterness are like cancer. They eat away at you and spill over into every part of your life. Even if the person who wronged you isn’t sorry, you can still forgive them for your own sake. Forgiveness will set you free and enable your heart to heal. God forgives us and He expects us to forgive each other. I know it’s hard. One sure way to make it a bit easier is to pray for the person who wronged you. It’s hard to stay angry at someone you pray for. Give the situation to God and ask Him to work it out. Ask Him to help you love instead of hold grudges. He will set you free.

Another thing I really admire about Joseph is his ability to see God at work in his trials. He saw God preparing him. Sometimes we don’t have a clue what God is up to. Ok…most of the time! However when you have a relationship with God, you study His Word and who He is, you can glimpse Him working behind the scenes. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”( ‭NLT‬‬)

In todays culture so many people are easily offended. If you want a true sense of humanity just get on a social media platform and read what people have to say. It is enlightening in the saddest way. God did not intend for people to be this way. God doesn’t want us to be judgemental and mean to each other. He wants us to love! Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬ tells us, “For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” ‭(NLT‬‬)

You might ask, “Who is my neighbor? Your neighbor is anyone you encounter. You might be thinking I’m a joke! I’m not! I’m just sharing what God’s Word says. He wants us to have a relationship with Him. He desires for us to live in love and forgiveness. Humanly this is impossible but all things are possible with God! (Matthew 19:26)

Keep on!

This is day 10 of 2023 and I’m just now stopping to blog. I decided to read through the Bible again this year in the New Living Translation. As I’ve been reading I’ve made notes on a few possible blog topics. Today I will focus on “Keeping on”. I came across this verse as I was reading recently. It’s a perfect verse for this first blog of the year. “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Keep on asking! God wants us to bring our concerns to Him. He delights when we choose to pray and acknowledge His Lordship over our lives. I love how God has revealed aspects of my relationship with Him through being a Mom. It warms my heart when my grown son seeks me out just to talk and share his life with me. God is my Heavenly Father, and He delights in me praying and seeking Him out to share my heart.

Keep on seeking! I want to know God more and more. Through studying the Bible, learning in church, worship and fellowship, I desire to grow into all He desires for me. Never become satisfied with where you are in your relationship with Jesus. There is always room to grow closer in our walk with Him. Study Jesus character and how He handled situations. I want to be a reflection of who He is. As I seek you Lord, change me!

Keep on knocking! As we ask, seek and knock He will reveal more to us. I want to walk in God’s will for my life. I desire to be the woman He created me to be. I desire to fulfill His call to shine for Him.

Keep on being You! I love when people are real and genuine. We are all human and make mistakes. We all need grace. As God freely gives us grace, be sure to give it to others.

Keep on finding joy in the little things in life. Last Sunday there was a young mom sitting behind me in church with her precious baby daughter. After the service I was marveling at the sweetness of this precious child and she let me hold her. Oh the simple joy and delight in holding a tiny baby.

Keep on finding fun in the ordinary things. My husband and I went to get our hair cut today. The same girl does both of our hair. I was showing her a picture of what I wanted and as I zoomed in ( I have low vision) we saw it was a wig. We all started laughing and I said to Ron, “A wig would solve your problem of having to bring me to get haircuts!” We were all laughing. I turned to our hairstylist and said “This is us!” Life is life, but you can find joy and laughter in the ordinary.

So whatever you do as you start off this year keep on keeping on. God has us. Keep looking to Him and He will direct you.

Do you have Room?

Picture found on Pinterest.

Do you have room? You might be wondering what in the world I’m talking about. Please hear me out. I am going somewhere with this. As Christmas is less than two weeks away, I find myself thinking deeply on the events that unfolded two thousand years ago.

To set the foundation for this blog, please read Luke 2:1-7 “Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all the people were on their way to register for the census, each to his own city. Now Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register along with Mary, who was betrothed to him, and was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (NASB2020‬: You Version App) (Emphasis mine)

Imagine the crowded roads full of travelers needing to register for the census. Now imagine young pregnant Mary nearing the time of labor, needing a place to stay. In my minds eye, I see a distraught Joseph after hearing there was no room in the crowded inn. The stable where the animals stayed, would have to do for their lodging.

Jesus the Son of God was born in a stable. Many laid him in a feeding trough because there was no crib or bed. If the inn keeper had known who was being born I feel certain room would have been made for Jesus Christ birth. Surely someone would have given up their room. However Jesus got the lowly stable, the feeding trough, the left overs.

Do you have room for Jesus in your heart ? Do you have time for Jesus in your daily routine? Does Jesus get your “leftovers”? You might be saying, “But I have so much going on! There is always something needing my attention. I need more hours in the day!” I hear you! Really I do!

Many times in life, my son has apologized to me saying, “Mom I’m sorry. I’ve just been so busy”. My response is usually, “I understand but you choose how you spend your time. Choose what is most important”.

Prepare room for Jesus today! Everyday! He is God’s greatest gift to us. Oh come let us adore Him…Christ The Lord!

It’s the season for parties and gatherings of all sizes. Tis the season of stretching me! Im not a groups kind of person. I love people but with limited hearing and vision its always a challenge as I try to navigate the social environment.

Today I had two Christmas events to attend with my mom. My husband had to work, so mom and I went to our Lit & Latte Book Club Christmas party and a ladies event at her church. We love our book club friends. Truth be told, I don’t hear very much of the discussion and kind of have to watch movements to figure out who is speaking. However they know me, my limitations, my story and love me anyway. The ladies event at moms church was a real stretch. I will guess there were over 100 ladies there. Some I had not seen in years. It was great to see them all again but these social settings are truly out of my comfort zone. Thankfully we sat front and center, so I could sort of see what was happening. Knowing my limitations I have to approach these things with a sense of openness and adventure. Everyone likely comes away from these things with different senses of pleasure. For me it was the joy of recognizing the worship songs when I can’t see the lyrics on the screen. As I raised my hand to worship Jesus, tears slid down my cheeks. I may not have gleamed much from the message because I couldn’t quite comprehend what she was saying but my heart heard the worship and I gave in to that precious gift.

As the festivities continue over the next couple of weeks, there will be more gatherings. Christmas can be challenging for some people. Whether it’s because of physical limitations, or pressures coming from expectations. Give yourself a break. Give the gift of you. Your presence, your smile, hugs, kindness are all gifts. Go with an open heart. Even if you feel broken, God will meet you there. You might feel stretched but if you are really honest about the important things, you will be blessed by giving the gift of you!

Oh come let us adore Him. oh come let us adore Him, oh come let us adore Him..Christ The Lord!

Just a thought?

Picture found on Pinterest

I came across this quote today when I saw a friends post. “You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate.” Elizabeth Gilbert. What a powerful truth! Just think, if we spent as much time selecting our thoughts as we do our wardrobe how much our lives would improve. Choose your thoughts carefully and be careful of what lingers there. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” (ESV)

Our thought life can feed our emotions. It’s wise to realize that our minds are a battle ground. We can and should filter our thoughts, but how? Philippians 4:8 tells us, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (ESV) emphasis mine. That’s pretty clear instructions.

There is always the temptation to speculate. People form ideas and thoughts based on things they think but are not factual. When the temptation arises, filter those thoughts.

Not only do we have power over our thoughts but we also have power over the words we speak. Speak positively! Speak life! I have known so many people who have been hurt by careless words. When our son was growing up, I told him “Spoken words are like toothpaste. Once it’s out you can’t put it back in”. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Proverbs‬ ‭18‬:‭21‬ ‭(ESV‬). Whoa! That’s powerful!

As we enter the holiday season where there ate many gatherings, let’s be mindful and considerate of those around us. Control your thoughts and your speech. Give the gift of genuine affection and encouragement. Everyone has issues whether they want to admit it or not. Everyone could use a smile, kind words and even a hug.

Let’s spread gifts of peace, kindness, love and joy! I don’t know about you but when I do these things it makes my heart feel happy. Be blessed as you be a blessing

Do You?

As I was reading the Bible this morning, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 stood out to me. These verses actually challenge me every time I read them. “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭16‬ -18 (NIV‬)‬. This is beyond challenging from a human point of view. That’s the thing, God wants us to depend on Him to enable us to do this. Can you imagine rejoicing or having great delight, ALWAYS? That’s what the verse says.

What about praying continually? When we have a relationship with Jesus we want to talk to Him about everything. The more I study the Bible, Gods Word and spend time with Him, the easier it gets to pray about everything. God cares about every single detail of our lives. As a mom, I love when my son wants to talk to me, ask for help or my opinion. God is the same way! He desires us to bring situations to Him and ask him to help us through whatever it is. It’s a loving relationship that draws us to pray continually! God loves us so much He gave His only son. John 3:16 says, ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.(ESV‬). I could go on and on here but bottom line is, God loves you more than you can ever possibly imagine. He is delighted when we desire to pray continually. Praying changes things! It may not always play out the way you think it will. The situation may not change in the way you want it to. However I am certain of this, prayer will change you! Your attitude will changes. Anger and negative feelings will change. Prayer will change your view on what’s going on. God enables us to see things differently. Sometimes that different perspective is all that needed to enable you to endure.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us to give thanks in ALL circumstances, (emphasis added). This is a tough one. In my personal life, living with hearing and visual limitations, thanking God for these things is hard. This is what God has shown me: Be thankful for what I can see and hear. Yes I do have significant loss BUT I still have some vision and some hearing. I’m beyond thankful for what I have even if it’s limited.

You may be thinking; Shannon you have no clue what I’m dealing with. You’re right, I don’t but God does! If you woke up this morning, He has a purpose for your day. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭136‬:‭1‬ ‭(ESV‬‬). Give thanks! You can find something to thank God for. When you focus on blessings, your attitude will change.

I understand that life is frustrating and dealing with people can be trying. The Bible gives us some practical ways to triumph over them. Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭6 says, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (ESV). So when you pray, thank God for working it out according to His perfect Will. Thank Him for His faithfulness. Thank Him that His promises stand.

Recently my husband and I were talking about health insurance. He was frustrated because it’s hard to get people on the phone then you are transferred around until someone finally can answer your questions. He was telling me, “I can’t get anyone on the phone!” I challenged him to be thankful in the situation. I told him, “We’ve prayed now let’s thank God for working it out.” His answer… “But you don’t understand.” I told him to just do it. Thank God for His favor. Thank God for working this out. Thank God when someone answers the phone. Thank God when the call is transferred because they are seeking a solution.” You get the picture?

So as we head into the holiday season let’s rejoice always, pray continually and be thankful in all circumstances because God is faithful always.

Speak Clearly

As I type this blog entry, I’m sitting in our sons old room, preparing for an opportunity to share my testimony tomorrow at a small group. I’m not one for self promotion but I will gladly share what God has done in my life. I have a unique story but only have about 30-40 minutes to share tomorrow. I’ve been praying about this all week and started making some notes this afternoon to guide my thoughts.

This afternoon when my husband Ron got off work I took a break and we had a late lunch with our son Joshua. We went to Bad Daddy Burger since my husband could get a free Veterans Day meal. Afterwards we went to the house where Joshua lives with some friends. It was a fun visit and Joshua and I played some indoor basketball. I stink but by the time we finished I was getting the hang of it. Once back home, I sat back down to continue preparing for tomorrow.

I know my purpose in life is to bring God glory through whatever situation He puts me in. As I sit here preparing, tears are rolling down my cheeks. It’s like a dam breaks and the tears roll down. The thing with most peoples testimony, it’s what God has brought you through. Like you have come through this and it’s because of God bringing you through. My testimony is a continuous test…. test after test after test. Seriously, it’s only because of the goodness of the Lord and the strength He gives me that I endure. His grace is certainly sufficient. His power is poured into my brokenness. It is HIStory, His strength, His everything. I am nothing without Jesus. He is faithful in all things.

My prayer is that He will speak clearly through me to encourage others. Life is not easy but all things are possible through Him. May more doors of opportunity open according to His will. Lord help me to speak clearly and from my heart to bring glory and honor to Your name. Thank you Jesus! Amen!

Where do you hide?

Picture found on Pinterest

Some times in life you may feel the urge to withdraw. You may feel a desire to hide your true self. There is much pressure in society to accept things contrary to your beliefs. Others might feel called to pursue something but afraid to take the risks of looking foolish. Whatever the reason, you can’t hide from God. He is not in any one location. He is everywhere. Psalms 139 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. I have many favorites but this one always touches my heart.

“I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. “Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭7‬ – 10 (NLT‬‬)

It’s comforting to know that God is with us where ever we are. We are never out of His reach Even in those lonely and isolating times, He is there, ready to comfort and love us. He longs for us to seek Him with all our heart.

Recently I was talking with my friend Valerie. We were talking about the sad state of our world and culture. The depravity of the world has gotten so bad. I told her some times I feel like I live under a rock because I’m not into tv, movies, or secular music. As I thought on that… living under a rock, I said, “That’s right! I live under The Rock – Jesus Christ!” A worship song is playing in my heart right now. “My hope is built on nothing less, than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name.“. (Robert Critchley Lyrics to My Hope is Built on Nothing Less. 2007) This resonates with me.

When I hear of the things going on in our society I am blown away by how far the moral has fallen. The indoctrination and grooming of children is mind blowing. Cancel culture and having unique values is like walking on egg shells. My husband recently spoke to a young man. He greeted him, “Hey man”. This is not unusual. My husband is very friendly and talks to everyone. This particular guy said, “I’m a girl”. So my husband said, “Hey girl”. He wasn’t being mean or rude but just trying to be friendly. People are so confused. It is just beyond me to understand the times we live in.

I was recently filling out forms online for an appointment I had and the questions asked were absurd. One example: What gender do you identify with? This was for a doctors appointment! I just don’t understand the confusion in our society. It’s beginning to be frowned upon to have high values and integrity. It makes no sense at all! Good has become evil and evil has become good. Don’t be afraid to speak truth in love. You can hide in Christ. He is our Cornerstone. “When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace, In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.” (Robert Critchley, Lyrics to My Hope is Built on Nothing Less, 2007)

I’m so thankful God does not expect me to understand but to just trust Him. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬ -6 NASB2020‬‬. All we can do is trust God and allow His love and truth to shine through us. If you get weary of this world just hide/rest in Jesus. Let Him renew you and fill you with His Spirit to rise up again.

Dear Jesus restore our resolve to stand firm for You in this spiritually dark world. Pierce the darkness and expose any deception. Set people free from the confusion of the enemy. We ask you to shine brightly and bring salvation to the lost that You purchased with Your blood on the cross. In Jesus name Amen.
